Kas is a popular presenter at photography and outdoor clubs, and was a keynote speaker at the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show, the Bruce Peninsula Outdoor Festival and at educational events sponsored by Parks Canada and Ontario Parks. She leads photographic and digital imaging workshops, and has been an instructor in Vistek's Saturday Seminar Series.
Kas's enthusiasm is evident in her lively presentation style, and she has a knack for tackling difficult subjects -- Photoshop's layer masks, Plate Tectonics, and the Mercator map projection sytem, for instance -- and making them comprehensible to people of all skill levels. The following is a sampling of the presentations and workshops in Kas's current lineup:
WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS
Landscape Photography: Kas was the Profiled Photographer in the Winter 2010 edition of Outdoor Photography Canada magazine and has spent countless hours in the field practising her craft. In this workshop she shares some tips and techniques for effective landscape image capture, including gear, exposure and visual design.
Expose Yourself to F-Stops and Shutter Speeds: This workshop goes back to photographic basics with a practical discussion of exposure. Learn how to use camera settings and histograms to achieve the "correct" exposure for the given lighting conditions, and see how various combinations of f-stops, shutter speeds and ISO can be manipulated to produce different, and often creative, visual effects.
Compose Yourself with Principles of Visual Design: This introductory visual design workshop begins with the fundamental photographic question "Why am I taking this picture?" and builds an image based on the answer. You'll learn some important "rules" and explore some techniques for effective composition.
Photoshop for Photographers: What You Really Need to Know: Photoshop is the industry standard in photo editing software. But for photographers it can also be frustratingly complex. This workshop is a photographer-friendly introduction to Photoshop that cuts through the mystique and gives you some simple, effective tools to tweak your photographs and get back where you belong -- out in the fireld with your camera!
Layers, Masks and Magic - Photoshop's Greatest Tools: This workshop is aimed at digital photographers with a basic knowledge of Photoshop who are looking to take their image editing to the next level. Working through practical examples, Kas makes sense of one of Photoshop's most intimidating -- and powerful! -- tools, and helps you create more effective images.
Shooting RAW: RAW images are the "digital negatives" captured by modern DSLR's, and shooting in RAW format allows you to extract the most potential from your photographs. This workshop will help you make the switch from JPEG to RAW image capture, and learn how to use Adobe Camera Raw, the software that comes bundled with Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.
Creating a Digital AV Show - An Introduction to ProShow Gold: This seminar teaches photographers how to put together a digital audio-visual presentation using the popular ProShow Gold software. The seminar begins with some general advice about how to select images and music for a show, and some common mistakes to avoid. It gives basic instruction using ProShow Gold to assemble and organize images, apply finishing touches and create output that can be played on a digital projector or home theatre system.
